Victims, Predators, and the Compassionate Self: Why IFS Cannot Explain Genocide

The Limits of Idealistic Psychology

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is explicit about its scope: it aims to help individuals relate compassionately to their internal parts. It does not claim to explain genocide, war, or mass violence. But this limitation is not neutral. It reveals something fundamental about the model’s architecture.

IFS depends on three assumptions:

  1. All parts are good.

  2. All harmful behavior is protective.

  3. A universally compassionate Self exists in every human.

These assumptions are incompatible with the psychology of predation, dominance, vengeance, and collective violence. They cannot metabolize the darkest human behaviors because they deny the existence of dark human capacities.

Bowen systems theory can. Forensic psychology can. Evolutionary psychology can.

IFS cannot.

Victims Become Perpetrators — and Forensic Psychology Can Explain Why

Forensic psychology has long documented a pattern that idealistic psychologies avoid:

Victims often become perpetrators.

Not because they are burdened. Not because they are wounded. Not because they are misunderstood. Not because their protectors are confused.

Victims become perpetrators because predation reverses the power imbalance.

In contexts of:

  • domestic violence

  • political oppression

  • ethnic persecution

  • systemic brutality

  • generational trauma

victimhood becomes:

  • existentially dangerous

  • psychologically intolerable

  • socially humiliating

  • structurally unstable

Evolutionary psychology predicts:

Victims will seek power reversal.

Forensic psychology confirms it.

IFS cannot acknowledge it.

Bowen’s Evolutionary Realism

Bowen’s model is informed by evolutionary psychology. It understands:

  • hierarchy

  • dominance

  • threat response

  • anxiety transmission

  • group pressure

  • survival strategies

  • predator–prey dynamics

Bowen would say:

“Victimhood increases anxiety. Predation reduces it. Systems move toward stability.”

IFS would say:

“The predatory part is trying to protect an exile.”

These are not compatible worldviews.

Bowen is structural and evolutionary. IFS is idealistic and moralized.

The Apex Predator Impulse

When a population is subjected to:

  • mass violence

  • ethnic cleansing

  • political collapse

  • genocide

the victim status becomes untenable. Evolutionary psychology predicts two paths to safety:

Path A: Authentic power reacquisition

  • political autonomy

  • territorial security

  • institutional stability

  • military protection

  • social cohesion

  • economic independence

Path B: Apex predation

  • vengeance

  • dominance

  • cruelty

  • extermination

  • retaliatory violence

  • ideological brutality

IFS cannot distinguish between these paths because it cannot acknowledge predation as a legitimate human impulse.

IFS must interpret:

  • dominance as protection

  • vengeance as burden

  • cruelty as woundedness

  • extermination as firefighter activation

This is forensically unusable.

The Compassionate Self as a Victim Ideal

IFS tells the victim:

  • your core is compassionate

  • your essence is benevolent

  • your true self is forgiving

  • your authentic nature is calm

  • your inner leadership is non‑violent

But in contexts of genocide, the victim’s path to safety is:

  • power

  • dominance

  • threat elimination

  • vengeance

  • apex predator status

IFS tells the victim:

“Your apex predator impulse is a burden.”

Evolutionary psychology says:

“Your apex predator impulse is survival.”

Bowen says:

“Your apex predator impulse is systemic.”

Forensic psychology says:

“Your apex predator impulse is predictable.”

IFS disinherits the victim from:

  • vengeance

  • dominance

  • power reversal

  • threat elimination

  • status change

IFS tells the victim:

“Your true self is compassionate.”

But the victim’s evolutionary psychology says:

“Your true self must become dangerous enough to never be victimized again.”

IFS blocks the victim’s instinctual path to safety.

Why This Matters for Understanding Genocide

Genocide is not:

  • burdened parts

  • wounded exiles

  • misunderstood protectors

Genocide is:

  • dominance

  • vengeance

  • power reversal

  • threat elimination

  • group anxiety

  • evolutionary logic

  • predator strategy

IFS cannot explain genocide because genocide requires:

  • cruelty

  • hierarchy

  • vengeance

  • dehumanization

  • power consolidation

  • collective predation

IFS cannot explain:

  • why victims become perpetrators

  • why oppressed groups become violent

  • why trauma produces dominance

  • why suffering produces cruelty

  • why vengeance becomes collective

IFS cannot explain genocide because its ontology forbids cruelty as a structural human capacity.

Bowen does not. Forensic psychology does not. Evolutionary psychology does not.

IFS is structurally incapable of explaining the darkest human behaviors because it denies the existence of dark human capacities.

Authentic Power Reduces Violence. Blocked Power Produces Predation.

This is the evolutionary arc:

  1. Victimization produces anxiety.

  2. Anxiety produces power‑seeking.

  3. Power‑seeking has two paths:

    • authentic power

    • predation

  4. Authentic power stabilizes systems.

  5. Predation destabilizes systems.

  6. Genocide emerges when predation becomes collective.

IFS cannot help a victim population achieve authentic power because it:

  • denies predation

  • denies dominance

  • denies vengeance

  • denies cruelty

  • denies hierarchy

  • denies structural power

  • denies evolutionary psychology

IFS tells the victim:

“Your true self is compassionate.”

But in genocide contexts, compassion is:

  • dangerous

  • maladaptive

  • destabilizing

  • structurally impossible

IFS cannot operate in war‑torn regions because it cannot metabolize the psychology of power.

Bowen can. Forensic psychology can. Evolutionary psychology can.

IFS cannot.

The Straight Conclusion

IFS is a model of emotional reframing, not structural realism. It cannot explain genocide because genocide requires:

  • predation

  • dominance

  • vengeance

  • cruelty

  • hierarchy

  • evolutionary pressure

IFS denies these capacities. Bowen integrates them. Forensic psychology studies them. Evolutionary psychology predicts them.

Victims become predators because predation reverses the power imbalance. Authentic power reduces violence. Blocked power produces predation.

IFS cannot metabolize this reality because it is built on the fiction of a universally compassionate Self.

Bowen does not need that fiction. Forensic psychology does not need that fiction. Evolutionary psychology does not need that fiction.

IFS is asking the shark to save the whale.

Bowen studies the shark.

Forensic psychology studies the ocean.
